A Heart Full of Gratitude: Reflections After Hurricane Milton

ree

As I sit and reflect on the recent experience of Hurricane Milton passing through Central Florida, my heart overflows with gratitude. So many things could have gone differently, yet God’s blessings were ever-present. One of the greatest gifts during that time was having my husband home with us. Being in the military, he’s often away, but that week, God brought him home. I watched as he worked tirelessly, preparing everything for us—ensuring we had water, food, and all the necessary supplies. He covered our home and property in prayer, asking for God's protection. His actions reminded me of St. Joseph, who safeguarded Mary and Jesus with unwavering love and strength. What a blessing to have him there, offering his protection and love just as St. Joseph did for his Holy Family.

In those moments, I felt no fear. There was no anxiety, no nervousness. My heart was at peace, knowing that we would be okay. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). I believed this deeply, and the peace that filled me was beyond understanding. I also found comfort in the daily video calls with my family, during which we prayed the rosary together. That experience brought the Church’s teaching to life for me—God didn’t create us to walk this journey alone. "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20). We need each other, and we draw strength from one another. It's so important to surround ourselves with people of faith, those who will lift us up and encourage our spiritual growth.

During the storm, my husband stayed awake all night, watching over everything, while the rest of us slept. His vigilance gave me the space to pray and trust in God's provision. Though we lost power for three days, and had to throw away spoiled food, we gained something far greater—precious family time. We grilled our meals, played games, laughed, and just enjoyed each other’s company without the distractions of electronics or the internet. Those moments of bonding, away from the hustle and bustle of life, were pure blessings.

I am so grateful that the storm spared our home, though I know many others weren’t as fortunate. My prayers go out to those who lost so much, and I hope they find comfort and relief in the days ahead. "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). May God's peace, which surpasses all understanding, fill their hearts.

I encourage you to see God’s hand in every situation, whether big or small. Embrace the here and now with your loved ones, and hold on to those moments that might otherwise slip away unnoticed. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him" (Romans 8:28).

My prayer for you is that in whatever storm you find yourself facing, you see God’s hand at work. May you find peace in the present moment, cherish the time with your loved ones, and trust that God is always with you, providing exactly what you need. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God" (Philippians 4:6). There is beauty even in the midst of a storm, and for that, I am truly grateful.

– With love and faith,

Monica
